Schiphol has one of the most sophisticated baggage handling systems in the world. This system can handle 70 million bags annually and is a worldwide showcase for innovation and automation. Being a hub airport for national, international and transit flights makes the baggage handling system of Schiphol highly complex. A total of 21 km of transport belts carry bags with a high speed to all the various gates of Schiphol with hardly any human intervention. Creating this system required a multi-year development plan and close collaboration with key-stakeholders and suppliers.
Seeing is believing. Therefore, on the 13th of February 2015 YPP will organize a behind the scene tour at Schiphol. The top manager of the baggage department Schiphol will then give a presentation on the history of the baggage program, it’s complexity, successes and prerequisites. Afterwards, we are going to see with our own eyes what luggage has to go through – literally speaking – and the complex technology that is needed to keep all systems running.
